Scaleta
is the easternmost village inside the bay of
▶ Rethymnon
on the Greek island of
▶ Crete
in the Mediterranean Sea.
Actually, it is not quite sure whether it is really a village as there are no old buildings at all.
By the very edge of the bay, there is however the tiny church of St. Nicholas, and besides there are quite a few new buildings of all kinds and sizes.

In the West, Scaleta begins where the bigger neighbouring village of
▶ Stavromenos
ends.
In the East it spreads until a range of hills that reaches to the water and this way borders the bay of Rethymnon.
The New National Road runs just in between.
Both on the land side and on the sea side, there is one bigger hotel each.

Among them there are some smaller hotels and apartment facilities, as well as a colourful mix of shops and catering enterprises which are mainly orientated to tourism needs:
Two restaurants, a number of tavernas and beach bars, car rental agencies, a travel agency, and a mini department store where you can really buy almost everything.

The coastal area of Scaleta also has several small sandy beaches, and by the eastern edge there is a pebbled beach just below the church.
Due to the panoramic views and the short distance to the beaches, several private holiday villas have been built during recent years on the slopes above Scaleta and Stavromenos, and many of them can be hired by the week as well.

In the neighbouring village of Stavromenos, the supermarkets and most of the other shops are open all-year.
There are 3 supermarkets, 2 butcher's shops, a bakery, 2 tavernas, a grill stand, a pharmacy, a ladies' hairdresser and barber, a photo shop, an internet cafe, a gas station, and many others.
